Xylo has done it yet again. Couple of weeks back Xylo had rewritten the records book for fastest drive in a 4 wheel vehicle from West to East. Team clocked another achievement of fastest south to north drive in a 4 wheel vehicle. The team comprising of Harinder Sidhu (from Tech Mahindra) & Karanbir (from Overdrive) drove in Xylo that was specially made for the drive by the brand team from Kanyakumari to Leh in flat 79 hours. The Xylo was specially equipped with ABS feature & with eye-catching decals all around the vehicle.

I feel really proud to write a review this great bike. Hero Honda Karizma is the best that has been launched in India. Now it gets even better with the all new racer edition : The New Karizma R. The price of Karizma is Rs.84000 and the engine packs an awesome 17 horse power in a 223cc Engine..

How does it look?

Indian bikers always wished for a bike like this, a real sporty looking bike, and their dreams have come true with the Karizma. On the first look, people would comment that the bike looks like a fighter jet! The air pockets in the front of the tank has been very precisely carved to blend aerodynamics with beauty.

Hero Honda’s Engineers have put in several months of work in developing their flagship model Karizma. It is not easy to bring a foreign style to India without compromising the engine capacity and mileage (which are the most important factors for Indian bikes). The is technically the first bike in India in which the doom blends with the main body of the bike. One big advantage of this is that the handle bars are free to turn because there is no extra weight attached to it (like the head light and dashboard). Karizma is the first bike in India which came with pre-installed alloy wheels.

I like the tail part of Karizma very much. This is perhaps the only bike in India which features dual tail lamps. When you look at the tail part, it does look like a jet. The slogan ‘Jet Set Go’ is perfect. The seat is little raised for the pillion rider which gives it a really sporty look. The bike has been so perfectly designed that I could not imagine a suggestion for improvement. Considering the overall size of the bike, the tail part does seem to have the right size. In Pulsar, you can notice that the tail is too small compared to the size of its tank, but in Karizma the proportion of the sizes of various parts is perfect.

How does it perform?

I can talk about performance all day long, because I have been personally using Karizma for the past four years! But I will try to keep this short and only highlight the main points.

Karizma is undoubtedly the bike with the highest horse power in India. (Considering bikes within the 1 Lakh Range). For a bike of 223 cc, 17 hp is really great! While driving, you can feel the surge of acceleration (and the surge of adrenalin!). You feel like like Hrithik Roshan if you give a full twist to the throttle. My Karizma is the first to dash of when the signal turns green, while others try to catch up with me, I look back to see that they are left far behind!

This bike is suitable both for city riding and riding in highways. As you put the fifth gear and slowly accelerate, the bike maintains its stability upto 110 Kmph, but later it gets a little shaky. I have personally tried going upto 125 Kmph, eventhough the claimed maximum speed is higher, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go faster than 110.

Looking into the dash board of the Karizma, we can see 2 dials, a RPM meter and a Speedometer and next to it is the digital panel which displays Fuel, a Trip meter, total distance and a digital clock! I really love the clock, I do not need to leave the handle bars to check the time in my wrist while driving! Visit the Karizma Photo Gallery to see pictures of the dash board.

The high beam and neutral indicators are situated in the speedometer dial. The indicators are bright enough so that you can easily see its status in bright sunlight.

Some people may think that such fast sport bikes are risky, but in my opinion, Karizma is the safest bike in India. Provided with adequate wheel base and body weight, the bike comes to halt easily from very high speeds without losing any stability.

How does it stand out?

For people who love this bike, it is really hard to admire the competition. Right now Pulsar 220cc seems to be the only competition for Karizma, but I would say that it does not even stand a chance with this legend.

Hero Honda Karizma’s high cost and size is not just for the looks and power. Along with it you also get something priceless… the Self Confidence and the King of the Road feeling. If in your college or institution, you are the only one with a Karizma, imagine the kind of feeling of uniqueness you will get. People will admire you for your bike and you will be known as The man who rides the Karizma.

Too many people have already bought Pulsars, CBZs and Apaches.. If you are planning to buy a 150cc bike, wait for a few months, raise some more money and go for the best. Because great people drive great bikes.

Bajaj Pulsar 300cc Speculation

Rumors are that Bajaj seem to be engaged in developing a bigger and sportier version of Bajaj Pulsar 300cc. If ever that’s happening probably it will give the Yamaha a run for its money as Pulsars are dubbed to be bikes with international features coming at Indian prices circles. But all fingers crossed at this point about neither the features nor the price and don’t know when it will hit the roads.

So, as of now the Bajaj engineers seem to enjoy the bike circles talk about their new, yet-to-be-launched newer bike, specifically the high-end Pulsar tweak, the Bajaj Pulsar 300cc. Its talked that Bajaj had Kawasaki give the initial design set up but they are going to develop it indigenously without having any Kawasaki-like looks.

There are also doubts about the front faring and as it’s going to be a 300cc bike that will fit well for racetracks, bike lovers want it to have a sporty looking front. There are some spy photos available and no one knows whether they are photoshop tweaked versions or the concept bike photos of Bajaj Pulsar 300cc. From photos, it does appear that the visor is not given proper attention. It also appears that the bike has a single cylinder and we simply cant wait to know the amount of power a single cylinder bike could deliver. People also expect that the new Bajaj Pulsar 300cc will be having a DTS-Fi engine.

As per the price industry people say that it could be well about the 1 lakh mark. Considering the Indian road conditions its all suspense as to how Bajaj will take mileage into their designing, as because at least we are not so rich to have a tank filled and it gets emptied in a few days’ time while commuting only to office; the 200cc Pulsar is giving just 30-35 kmpl and should this give around 20 kmpl it becomes a white elephant. As to the power it’s still a guessing but one can expect more than 45 bhp.

People from Yamaha and Honda say that Bajaj is not into any making of a Pulsar 300cc or so and it’s just their marketing strategy of hyping about their forthcoming launches, so people talk about the brand and promote it before even the launch has happened.

Bike lovers, especially Pulsar lovers just hope that Bajaj Pulsar 300cc gets due attention with respect to sporty looks, seat saddle, headlamps and also the kick-start option. Not to mention about the 6-speed transmission and gearshift concerns that earlier Pulsars have.

So said, Bajaj Pulsar 300cc can really brighten up the Indian automobile market and Bajaj will take over the competition by 360 degrees. All we can do is open our eyes and wait for the bike to roll down the Indian roads.

Brand New Pulsar 220 – A Surprise From Bajaj Auto

Expect the unexpected! Bajaj is going aggressive and on a rampage. In keeping up with the promise made by Bajaj to launch six bikes in the first half of the year, Bajaj is busy launching another ‘surprise’. After the ‘loaded’ upgrade to Pulsar 180 2009 edition, reports have it saying that Bajaj would launch an all new Pulsar 220 which they say would be the fastest bike in India. The bike would sport the same 220cc mill from the earlier Pulsar 220 but would have Bajaj’s DTSi technology in place of DTS-Fi. That means the bike would be carburated and will do away with the Fuel injection.

Despite the move-back to carburetor from Fuel Injector, Bajaj says this bike would be the fastest Indian bike which is expected to attain a true top speed of more than 140kmph which would make it a tad above than the existing Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi. Also expected is that the bike will blast away to 0-60 and 0-100 kmph faster than the earlier version. Mileage is expected to suffer somewhat because of the lack of Fuel Injection especially while long touring.

Now here comes the decider! Speculations have it saying that the bike would be priced way below the current FI version. The bike is expected to be priced around Rs.70,000 ex-showroom Delhi (yes….you read it right) which would make the bike around 15,000 lesser than the existing Fuel Injected version which currently sells for Rs.85,000 ex-showroom. All this is leading to make us believe that Bajaj would dispense off the existing Pulsar 200 and this new bike would replace it which would make this bike the most practical bike in India by far. The bike is expected to sport an all-black theme reminiscent to Pulsar 200 and might do-away with some existing tit-bits.

Many would question about the decision to shed off Fuel Injector, but our sixth sense is predicting that there would be another surprise in the waiting (goshh..we have become so addicted to surprises by Bajaj) we might see another ‘Big’ bike in the near future loaded with Fuel Injection and all the latest gizmos and technologies which Bajaj is known for. It must be known that Bajaj was going through a lean patch in terms of the bikes sold a few months back and this launch clearly suggests that Bajaj doesn’t want to let it go. This bike will certainly boost Bajaj the much needed volumes from this segment as well.

Bajaj has already launched XCD135, Pulsar 150 and Pulsar 180 2009 versions this year in keeping with the promise of launching six bikes during initial year and this would be the fourth bike of the promised lot. This bike would directly compete with the newly launched TVS Apache RTR 180, Hero Honda Karizma, Yamaha FZ 16/S and (soon to be launched) Fazer in terms of price and Yamaha R15 in terms of performance. The Lambretta SX - A Sixties Icon

The Lambretta SX scooter has always been close to my heart, ever since the mid to late sixties when you had to be either a Mod or a Rocker. At that time I was just too young to ride a motorcycle or scooter but loved the whole Mod fashion thing.

My friends were in the main older than me by a couple of years which meant they were allowed to own those beautifully polished Vespa's with chromed bubbles, which are great scooters, but better than that a couple of them had the stunning Lambretta 200 SX. The thing I liked most about the SX was that it seemed longer than the Vespa, which not only enhanced and streamlined it but also seemed to give more room for a pillion to ride in comfort.

The whole Mod thing was great, living Newcastle meant there was a real buzz, however if we wanted to try these wonderful machines for speed we had to head to the country, probably into Northumberland. As a passenger I felt as if we were doing 90 mph, however in reality the Lambretta SX was only capable of speeds around 75mph.

I recently discovered an article about a guy called Nathan Redfearn who renovates and rebuilds scooters. The thing caught my eye was a picture of a perfectly restored Lambretta SX 200 with Union Jack side panels; it was absolutely stunning. Reading on I discovered that he had moved to Vietnam in 2003 whilst working for ICI, his background being in car restoration in both Britain and America.

It was great to read that he felt he owed his existence to the Lambretta; apparently in the sixties his Mother was a young Mod cruising around Torquay on her blue and white SX. These days he has a passion for restoring, and has set up a business in Ho Chi Min City (formerly Saigon).

With his Vietnamese wife and a fully trained workforce of around sixty people they import and strip the scooters down to their component parts before lovingly restoring them to look like new. They replace any rusted or worn parts before putting them on a jig for trueness, then finally reassemling and painting. All parts are genuine replacements sourced from the likes of Piaggio.

As a company they are aimed squarely at the motorcycle and classic car enthusiast although you can tell that his first love is the Lambretta. Restoring between 30 and 40 scooters a month they will ship anywhere in the world and guarantee satisfaction. The term "non-salvage" does not mean that some of the parts or components may not come from a wrecked motorcycle. If the seller needs to sell the frame as scrapped, your local DMV can tell you the process to follow so that both parties are protected and have the legally required paperwork. This varies greatly from State to State, so be sure to fully understand your area's requirements for this situation.

By keeping all receipts as proof of purchase and ensuring you have title to the engine and frame, or other proof of ownership acceptable to your state, you can progress through the process through the standard safety inspection, titling, insuring, and registration.

Custom Motorcycle Built from Some or All Salvaged Parts

This scenario is one of the more difficult situations with which to ensure your custom build will be easy to title and register. When a motorcycle has been involved in an accident and declared a "total loss" by the insurance company and the State's Department of Motor Vehicle, the title is taken from the vehicle, reducing it to a pile of parts which can be sold to people like you who are seeking low priced parts for a custom build.

As for the modifications outside of the gearbox, the next thing of importance is of course the torque converter. In an automatic equipped vehicle, one of the most important components in the entire car in regards to optimizing performance is a correctly configured converter.

In addition to being made with many strength improvements over the factory piece, a performance converter enables a vehicle to better take advantage of the RPM range at which power is made.

In essence, a torque converter is an infinitely variable transmission in and of itself, and altering its torque multiplying characteristics becomes absolutely necessary when other variables in the vehicle are changed (more boost, power enhancers, etc).

On a diesel powered vehicle, the correct torque converter configuration is quite different than that which would benefit a gasoline powered car. In short, diesels make much more torque without the increase of RPM's and shift in power band that a gas motor needs to increase horsepower.

Lowering the stall speed and increasing the efficiency of the fluidic coupling effect are the name of the game in a diesel. This can often be seen on a dyno with more of the power making its way to the wheels.

Even in otherwise stock VW vehicles, ET reductions of up to full second are not at all uncommon with the addition of a properly configured converter.

Transmission, torque converter and valve body upgrades are not only for American made vehicles anymore. Increased performance, durability and more efficient shifting is now available for the vehicles of almost every manufacturer- thanks in part to the few companies that are willing to do the research and development work required for this rapidly growing segment of the automotive aftermarket.

THE NEW YAMAHA FZ 16

As you can see for yourself, the styling of the FZ16 was central to the project. At least that is the official line. They first created the look and the 'fitted' the engineering into the design. No, really. That is why the FZ16 runs those fat tyres, has the faux pivot plate in aluminium colour, the faux aluminiun subframe look sidepanel and all. Like they scaled the R1 down for the R15, they scaled the FZ1N down for the FZ16. Personally, I'm just happy to be looking at an Indian bike that would hold its own anywhere in the world. As is usual with Yamaha, build quality, fit and finish levels are all great and I don't get the feeling that something will rattle loose, soon or later.

Engine

This is where the actual engineering began. The FZ16's aircooled engine is significantly different from the R15. Despite much prodding, for instance, Mizuno San, the project leader refused to accept that the R15 and the FZ16 motors shared more than a bare minimum of aggregates.

Creating two significantly different engines for what is effectively the same displacement band is a significant thing. It means that Yamaha is willing to look past economies of scale and parts sharing to create motorcycles that clearly adhere to a pre-defined role. Which is why the FZ16 feels quick of the line. Not quick enough to blow your socks off, mind you, but quick enough for you to notice the performance. I've read that the top-end isn't all that great and that FZ16 is reading from the same chapter on top-end as the Unicorn, but I don't subscribe to the same school. I think the FZ16 is clearly defined as an urban tool with styling and effortless low-rev performance being the two central themes, and this the engine does. That said, it is lighter than the competition, which should fill most performance gaps that the FZ16's peers might expose. The gearbox is a regular Yamaha job - slick and I don't think too many people will complain of the FZ16 being a laggard. In fact, I'd be very surprised if despite the low-rev focus, the FZ16 didn't equal or outperform its immediate competition.

Ride Quality, Handling and BrakingPersonally:

going into the test drive, I was expecting the storming tyre sizes to cause much trouble. Needless to say, my confidence in Yamaha's engineers was redoubled. Not only does the FZ16 handle well, it seems not to notice the extra rubber at all. I later found one of the reasons while helping some Yamaha staffers transfer a set of spare MRF tubeless radials from one car to another. The weigh nothing. Really, with tyres that light, it's no surprise that the not only does the FZ16 feel grippy, stable and responsive, it feels happy rather than that 'anchored' feeling that overtyred bikes seem to develop.

Ride quality is stiff and sporty, though. Again, personally, I've had the privilege of riding enough bikes to know that while plush ride feels great, stiffer setups encourage you to push harder and explore the envelope more... sometimes at the expense of your back. This is a compromise I have no problem with. You, on the other hand, might. Some riders who had the foresight to lower the preload to the softest settings reported instant, and noticeable ride quality improvements. I found the setup bouncy only over the worst of the roads, where the tyres do seem to bounce up off the surface entirely. In any other situation, the ride quality never comes to the point where you will leap off the motorcycle hurling abuse. I like it, but I think this is a personal choice so you should, ideally, ride an FZ and form your own opinion. Your experience will vary.

The braking is superb. No surprise there. Fat forks offer flex-free feedback-rich braking which the fat tyres respond to really well by mashing the larger contact patch firmly into the ground. I do wish that Yamaha'd put in a set of radially mounted brakes for brag value alone... but the whole wishes-horses thing applies to that line of thought, right?

Features

stuffFull LCD instruments, baby! But all is not well in that department. Internationally, Kawasaki came in for all-round notoriety for the all-LCD revcounter on their Ninjas from two generations ago because of readability issues. On the other hand, Ducati are currently running a slick, large race-spec all-LCD instrument cluster on the 1098, 848 etc. So it can be done. Yamaha haven't cracked it, I must admit. The tacho readout is cluttered by lots of design elements and the effect is that gathering info off the LCD meters takes some getting used to. Only the speedo is easy to read and the surfeit of carbon fibre, orange and white stickers makes the otherwise sleek instrument cluster a bit, how shall I put it, overdone. I do also have to point out that there's a few random stickers (like 'Monocross' on the side panel that add no value whatsoever to the motorcycle's style and could easily have been skipped.

Overall

As you can probably tell, I'm as impressed with the FZ16 as I was with the R15. But, there's a catch. The FZ16 is expensive compared to the 150s it wants to beat and the question is, is that extra money worth paying. This is something you must decide for yourself. I would have no hesitation paying the Rs 6000-odd extra for the solid feel, international looks and the general competence of the motorcycle. But would you? Tell me, leave a comment.

Tata Motors has begun taking orders for its Nano minicar.

The Indian automaker on Thursday opened up its booking system for the high-profile Nano, which it has pitched as the "people's car"--a first automobile for families that, until now, have had to crowd onto a scooter. There are only approximately nine vehicles per 1,000 people in India, according to the Reuters news agency.

Bookings will close in just more than two weeks, on April 25. The company had made application forms for bookings available at the beginning of the month and said the response has been "very encouraging."

Priced starting at about $2,000 for the standard version, the Tata Nano is a very modest machine. It's about 10 feet long, weighing in at about 1,300 pounds, and Tata says it can "comfortably" seat four adults. The top speed for the car, which has a two-cylinder, 624-cc, rear-mounted engine, is about 65 miles per hour. The gas mileage is said to be about 56 miles per gallon.

Prospective buyers seemed most attracted by the low price (only about three times that of a low-end scooter), according to a Reuters report.

"I have experienced other foreign small cars," Denis Quadros, 42, who owns a Maruti Wagon R, told Reuters. "They are expensive to maintain and consume a lot of fuel. But look at Nano's mileage, and we know Tata cars are cheaper on maintenance."

Tata plans to begin delivering the cars in July.

But even then, there could be a long wait for those who've booked a Nano order. At the end of June, Tata plans to announce the allotment of the first 100,000 cars, as determined by a computerized random selection. News agencies reported that it will likely take Tata more than a year to fill the 100,000 orders.

Riding the bike without the motor on is also important when you are in areas that don't allow them or quiet areas. Operation of these bikes is really simple and requires you to pedal and release the clutch while giving it throttle to turn the motor on.

To turn the motor off you just disengage the clutch and push the engine kill button, that's it. They are single speeds and come with a standard 44-tooth rear sprocket, which is the best for all around riding. These bikes can be easily modified to go faster, but with the standard 44-tooth sprockets you can reach speeds of 20+ mph even with riders weighing 260 pounds, very impressive! I now can leave my car parked more because I have an alternate means of transportation and most importantly I am not spending as much in gasoline, which makes me feel like I made a wise investment.

1000 miles later the motorized bicycle is still running great and has proven to be bulletproof. Maintenance has been light and simple as it is continuing to prove to be a great investment.
